Dealing with Birthday Disappointment

I think I've been referring to my oldest daughter as my "almost 6 yr. old" for several months now.  I've also had it in my head that she'd be getting a big over the top Barbie party with all her friends from school and playgroup.

Unfortunately I've come to the realization that what I had planned isn't necessarily what's going to happen.  Her birthday is in a couple weeks... which is also in the midst of when we're supposed to start our kitchen renovation.

Since my husband will be helping out with the kitchen remodel, I'd be on my own throwing a party with my 3 girls plus trying to entertain a dozen or so more kids.  I'm thinking it's going to be a much smaller affair now.  Just a few friends, probably at a local park (weather permitting) since we can't have it at our house.

I'm just bummed that it's not what I had in mind.  I already explained to my daughter that it wouldn't be all the kids from her class but just a few friends instead.  I thought she'd be more disappointed, but she really didn't seem to care.  Playing at the park with friends sounds like fun to her!

I guess I'm more upset about it than she is.  When you get it in your head of how something's going to turn out, and then it doesn't, it can be a huge letdown.  And feeling like I'm not giving my daughter the huge birthday party she deserves is tough to deal with as a parent.

I know it'll still be a fun day... it's all about her having a good time.  And she is getting a family birthday celebration out at the Grandparent's house in addition to the small get-together with her friends, so I don't think she'll be lacking in the 'birthday fun' department.  I just need to realize that as much as you can try to plan things, you have to leave room for the unexpected and be flexible for any changes that may come up.

The Night Night Book by Marianne Richmond {Review & Giveaway}

When we first received the book, my 3 yr. old wasn't so sure though.  She still wanted her other goodnight book before bed, the one she was familiar with.  The next night when I brought out The Night Night Book again, she let me read it to her but then still wanted the other book read afterward.

By the next night though when I gave her a chance to choose between the two, she went for The Night Night Book.  She loved pointing out all the things in the book- the crayons and flowers, the slide and ball.  She asked for it several nights in a row after that, and it has definitely become one of her top favorite bedtime books.

My 20 month old however was hooked the very first time I read it to her!  Night night is how she says goodnight and this book was just perfect for her.  The first time I read it, she sat quietly through the whole thing- just watching and listening.  Since then she's gotten more involved and also loves to point out different things in the book.  Her favorite page is the "Silly dog, chasing squirrels, chasing frogs".  She loves to sound like a dog and then "ribbit" like a frog... it's so cute!

This is definitely a nice addition to our nightly bedtime stories... a new classic for sure.  Your toddler or preschooler will love hearing this book and then 'reading' it themselves.

Before I had kids, I never really paid attention to a budget while shopping, but I still liked getting a good deal.  I have always been a fan of Old Navy for their cute clothes, and the fact that I could get a lot for my money.  While pregnant, I even shopped there for maternity clothes- they weren't overpriced and they had sizes small enough to fit me.

After I had kids, I became more conscious of staying on a budget and wanting to save for my family.  I love dressing my girls in stylish clothes, but I don't like spending a lot of money when they just grow out of them so fast.  And with three daughters, if I'm not careful where I shop, I could very easily break the bank.

So I was super bummed when the Old Navy store in my area closed.  Thankfully though, when I went online I was relieved to see that OldNavy.com has the same great selection and prices, and shipping is always free on orders over $50.  So I can buy for all three of my girls, have it sent right to the house, and still stay within our budget!

There is of course a store in a nearby city where we can go shopping on occasion when we want also.  Whether I shop online or in the store, I always love checking out the sales and clearance items.  They have tshirts starting at just $5 and adorable sundresses from about $10.  That's amazing considering we looked in another big name department store and similar dresses were priced at $20.

My Toddler is on a Milk Strike!

My youngest is 19 mos. old and since I stopped giving her a bottle (a month ago) she hasn't been drinking any milk.  She has always had juice and water from a cup but when it came to her milk she was only drinking it out of a bottle, and still preferred it warm.

I was told to just cut her off 'cold turkey' basically and that she'd eventually get used to it.  My other girls did it this way and they ended up drinking milk from a cup just fine.

Not my toddler though, oh no... she refuses to drink any milk.  In fact, if you try to trick her and get her to drink it, she spits it right out!  I've tried regular sippy cups, cups with straws, cups with soft spouts, cups with hard spouts... nothing is working.

I'm now starting to doubt myself and wondering whether I should give in and let her have a bottle.  My oldest was off a bottle right at a year old, my middle daughter took a couple months longer, and now my youngest is taking the longest yet.  I really hadn't been that concerned about it though, thinking she'd do it when she was ready, until I went to the doctor and they said I should take away her bottle before it got any harder.

Do health professionals just make a big deal out of this for nothing?  Are they pushing us parents to make our children do things they aren't really ready for?

My daughter is eating yogurt and will eat a somewhat good variety of food.  I just worry of course that now she isn't getting the proper amount of calcium.

When did your baby give up the bottle and drink milk out of a cup?  Any specific cup or tips/tricks that worked best for you?

Color it by Numbers {Review & Giveaway}

I don't know any kid who doesn't like to color.  And coloring by numbers is something I remember doing as a child myself.  My almost 6 year old is now at the age where she likes to do more stuff on the computer too.

My 6 year old has asked to color on the computer every single day since I downloaded it!  It's now her favorite thing to do after her younger sisters go to bed and before her bedtime.  And the best part is that you can clear all the pictures once your child has colored them all in so they can start again.  I've seen printable color by number pages before but Color it By Numbers is the best I've seen for computer coloring for kids!

Things I'll miss about baby days...

My husband and I have 3 beautiful girls and feel like we're 99.9% sure that we are done having kids... no more babies for us.  Though we have brought up the 'What if we had one more?' discussion, I don't think either of us feel that we need or want to have another baby.  So these are some of the things I'll always miss as my girls get older:

• coming up with baby name ideas
• hearing them cry for the first time
• chubby cheeks & thighs perfect for squeezing
• soft, sweet-smelling baby hair & skin
• open-mouthed kisses
• baby giggles and squeals
• tiny feet and hands
• tiny baby clothes, blankets, and shoes
• hearing "mommy" (why does it inevitably have to go to just plain ol' "mom"?)
• cuddling, rocking, and singing lullaby's
• first wobbly toddles across the floor
• hearing 'I love you' for the first time

Everyday our girls are growing bigger and learning more things.  With each new milestone they reach or each birthday that passes, it's always bittersweet... there's pride in seeing them accomplish something but sadness that they're no longer babies anymore.

Even after daughter #3 though, I always said that I wasn't going to make anything permanent.  We think we're done having kids, but we're not closing the door on it entirely.  And I do still have a backup baby girl name if there's ever a 4th girl added to our family and of course a baby boy name also... just in case.  ;)

Is your family complete?  How did you know you were done having kids... or are there more in your future?

Raising a well-rounded child...

I participated in a survey recently from a mom site regarding children and education.  Some of the questions were similar to (not verbatim), What's more important- that your child have a good education or be socially capable?  Would you do anything to help your child succeed?

I think that most parents want BOTH for their child (though that wasn't an exact option on the survey).  And really they kind of go hand in hand- if you teach your child to have good social skills, then that can lead to success in life.  Every person should strive to be well rounded... I don't think an extreme in either direction is ideal.  And I think most parents would do everything they could to help their child... helping with homework, utilizing a company such as StudyPoint for in-home tutoring options when it's necessary, enrolling them in organized sports, participating in after-school programs.

But can that go too far... is it possible to push your child too hard?  Most parents would get their child a tutor if they were struggling in school, but would you get them tutoring or classes to make them excel past their grade level?  To get them into college early?  To push them into a specific career path?  Force them to continue in a sport they didn't enjoy?

Even though my oldest daughter is just now in Kindergarten, I realize it's important that we give her the best start possible.  We opted for school of choice to get her into a better school, and if she needed tutoring or extra help you can bet we'd get it for her.  But even though I want my kids to do well in school, I don't want them to become obsessed with a grade or 'winning' in a sport... I don't want them to be consumed by succeeding in everything they do.  I think it's just as important to know how to cope when you do fail at something and learn how to go on from there.

And I think success can be interpreted differently by different people.  Your definition of success may not necessarily include being monetarily wealthy.  If your child grows up to always be kind to others and has a social conscience- would you consider them successful?  And would you consider yourself a success for raising them that way?

My kids got to try out several products from the Green Beaver Jr. line.  I didn't use much of the Bubble Bath but it got nice and bubbly, tons of fun for the kids.  The kids Shampoo smells sweet like berries, lathers nicely, and is tear-free.  Afterward I used the Conditioning Detangler on my daughter's naturally curly hair to get any kinks out... the result- nice and smooth, without the 'Ouch'!

I think my 3 year olds favorite product was the Green Apple Natural Toothpaste- she loved the taste.  I liked it also, but not because it tastes like green apples.  I like it because it's safe if my daughter accidentally swallows some of it!  It's flouride-free and doesn't contain any harsh foaming agents (SLS or SLES), but yes it does naturally foam up.  This is perfect for toddlers transitioning from the training toothpaste to big kid toothpaste.  They also have Zesty Orange (another kid favorite) and Frosty Mint & Star Anise for the more traditional taste.
