Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" A Pop-Up Book {Review}

There's only a week left before Christmas, but still time to pick up this classic tale to bring home and share with your loved ones.  Most of us have probably heard the story as a child or watched it as a movie... in some form or another most people know of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol".   The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.  This book has a new way to read and look at the story though- in  POP-UP form!
Every page has a beautifully intricate and detailed scene from the story illustrated by Chuck Fischer- it's a book both young and old will enjoy.  For younger children you can go from memory and tell a shortened version of the tale while just letting them look at the pictures.  There's also hidden treasures on some of the pages so there's lots to see.  For the older kids and adults, there are five removable mini-books throughout, one on each page.  The first one is a biography of Charles Dickens the author, the remaining four books include the entire text of "A Christmas Carol".
This would make a great addition to your bookshelf at home, a holiday classic to read and look at, over and over every year.  A new tradition with your children (just don't let the real little ones actually get ahold of it as there's lots that can be torn off if not careful).  This is one of those books you'll want to have in the family for a long time, sharing the tale as it was once told to you.

You can find "A Christmas Carol" pop-up book by Chuck Fischer from these retailers, and locally at stores like Barnes & Noble and Walmart.

Disclosure:  I was given a product for the purpose of the review.  All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and yours may differ.

Surviving a Snow Day...

...when it's too cold to send the kids outside!

Where we're at here in Michigan, the kids had their very first snow day of the year.  And Tuesday will be the 2nd snow day of the year.  So how to keep your kids from bouncing off the walls while they're cooped up in the house and keep your sanity too?

My oldest is 5 and only goes to Kindergarten half day so this wasn't too much of a change for us.  But it was still an extra three hours having her home instead of at school.  Three extra hours to fight with her 2 year old sister and bug me to go play outside in the snow... except that it was only 9° (with a wind chill making it feel like -5°) so I couldn't send her outside!
Thank goodness for kids shows on tv, and finally new holiday episodes so I don't have to wear earplugs while they're watching them (it can be rough hearing the same songs over and over).  So the girls watched some of those, also good ol' coloring book and crayons and playdoh helps to keep the kiddos occupied.

If you have older kids, hopefully you have all the goodies- video games, computer, ipod... stuff to keep them entertained.  And hopefully you also have plenty of food and snacks on hand to keep their tummy's full- hungry kids are always cranky!
If you're up for more hands-on activities, a craft or some baking (what kid doesn't like frosting and eating Christmas cookies) is something most younger kids, and older as well, will enjoy.  Here's a few websites for some easy holiday craft ideas, depending on what you have on hand:
I think we'll be attempting to make some simple homemade ornaments for the tree tomorrow.  And hopefully I'll have some pics for Wordless Wednesday.
If your kids also have a snow day, what will you be doing?

Caring for the Elderly

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I wrote a post for NMEDA about a month ago, but at the time didn't really know what it meant to actually care for someone with a disability or an elderly person.  Just a couple weeks ago that changed for me.  My grandmother is over 90 years old, and now needs around the clock care.

I've started staying overnights at her house a couple days a week, making sure all her bedtime routines are taken care of properly and that she gets in bed safely.   I can now see the need for equipment to help her get around, and for those that are caring for her during the day to get her out of the house to her doctor appointments.

NMEDA is a non-profit trade association that doesn't actually sell anything, they educate consumers on buying mobility equipment from a qualified NMEDA dealers.  NMEDA dealers, members, are the ones who sell handicap vans and vehicle modifications for disabled and elderly people.

The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is a recognized accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry.  The program was developed to promote quality, safety, and reliability within the industry.  Some states now require a dealer's participation in the QAP to perform work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs.  The QAP is the only program of this nature developed for the mobility equipment industry.  A QAP designation enhances vehicle modification and mobility equipment installation in a manner consistent with the highest guidelines available in the industry

I am thankful that my grandma is still with us and of sound mind.  And anything that can make her more comfortable and able to live her life to the fullest down to her last days is something that's worth looking into.

You can find out if there's a qualified NMEDA dealer near you here.
